This study analyses the factors that determine primary school enrolment in Pakistan, using data generated by Pakistan Socio-economic Survey (PSDE) carded out by Pakistan Institute of Development Economics between March and July 1999. Earlier studies have isolated a number of such factors, but the role played by poverty in this context has seldom been examined. The present study reveals that poverty exerts a significant negative influence on the primary school enrolment, which is independent of the effect of household income. The results of this study indicate that eradicating poverty can go a long way in increasing primary school enrolment as well as reducing the gap between the enrolment rates of boys and girls. 1.
